Global Positioning System

Global Positioning System

The

Global Positioning System
is a satellite navigation system. GPS is funded by and controlled by the U. S. Department of Defense (DOD). While there are many thousands of civil users of GPS world-wide, the system was designed for and is operated by the U. S. military.
It provides specially coded satellite signals that can be processed in a GPS receiver, enabling the receiver to compute position, velocity and time.
Four GPS satellite signals are used to compute positions in three dimensions and the time offset in the receiver clock.

Observation Systems
Monochrome observation systems have been used for years and are generally less expensive than color systems, though the cost of color systems has come down appreciably in recent years. Monochrome cameras dollar-for-dollar give better resolution pictures plus the cameras are inexpensive and work better in lower light conditions. With Infrared illumination, many cameras are equipped with LEDs [light emitting diodes], which are solid-state devices that emit a light that is invisible to the human eye but shows up as daylight when used with black & white cameras.
